MANGO TREE

The Mango Tree is just beautiful! Belongs in an art gallery.
— Visitor, 2012

The Mango Tree was created as part of an exhibition exploring Brisbane backyards at the State Library of Queensland in 2013.

The tree was brought to life using a variety of textures and fabrics and became a hive of activity for the four months of the exhibition. Children loved harvesting the fruit, raking up leaves that could be hung back on the tree and playing with the two families of handcrafted fruit bats.

A whole host of visitors including handmade cockatoos, lorikeets, magpies, insects and a friendly cat gave children the opportunity to re-enact, share and elaborate on the stories of their own backyard adventures.
